Ingredients and administration
Hydrocortison Hualan tablets contain the active substance hydrocortisone (ATC code: H02AB09) in the dosages 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg and 15 mg. Each tablet also contains a defined amount of lactose monohydrate (depending on strength 47.9 mg to 191.6 mg). The tablets are to be taken orally and are divisible. The dosage must be adjusted individually depending on the patient’s response. The recommended daily dose for adults is 20-30 mg hydrocortisone, divided into two to three single doses. The daily dose for children is 0.4-0.8 mg/kg body weight. Individual dose adjustment is necessary. Therapy must not be discontinued abruptly, but gradually.
Areas of application
- For use as replacement therapy in primary or secondary adrenocortical insufficiency and for the prevention of acute adrenocortical crisis.
- Preoperatively and during severe trauma or illness in patients with known adrenal insufficiency or adrenal insufficiency or doubtful adrenal cortical reserve.
Hydrocortisone is the most important corticosteroid produced by the adrenal cortex. Naturally occurring glucocorticoids (hydrocortisone and cortisone), which also have a salt-reducing effect, are used as replacement therapy for adrenal insufficiency. Due to their potent anti-inflammatory effects, they are also used for diseases of numerous organ systems.
Possible side effects
Possible side effects include mental disorders (e.g. depression, euphoria, anxiety, thought disorders), cardiovascular complications (e.g. hypertension, heart failure), increased susceptibility to infections and gastrointestinal complaints such as ulcers and bleeding. Skeletal changes (osteoporosis, aseptic bone necrosis), endocrine effects (Cushing’s syndrome, growth retardation in children), metabolic changes (e.g. sodium and water retention, hypokalemia) and ocular complications (glaucoma, cataract) may also occur. The side effect profile depends on the dose and duration of use.
